Obedience & Behavior Modification
There are two main components in house dog training, Behavioral, and Obedience. Behavioral training corrects bad habits that your dog may have developed such as begging, digging, jumping on people, excessive barking, aggressive behavior, and so on.
Obedience training is one of the most important aspects of raising a dog. In fact, a well trained dog is by far a happier dog! Why? Because a trained dog requires fewer restrictions. The more reliable the dog, the more freedom he is given.
We start with leash manners, that is staying within a 1 meter boundary of you when you are stationary or moving developing a solid, attentive foundation then working into the following “12 Obedience Steps:
- Sit
- Sit & Stay, Maintain sit during walk, and run by.
- Down, Down & Stay with handler out of sight.
- The use of control position
- Healing on a loose leash, and Directional healing
- Healing at different speeds
- Come when called (re-call)
- Front & Finish
- Place
- Watch Me
- Leave it, out, and Food refusal
- Stand for Examination

Building Block Approach – Each weeks work lays a foundation for the next week. In order to progress dog must be ready for the next lesson. Homework. It is important to be consistent during the training process.
Patience & Tone of Voice – Dog training is the formation of communication between dog and owner. Dogs don’t understand words until we teach them. Messages they get come from demeanor and tone of voice.
Example: Praise tone (Demonstrate with “Good Dog”)
Command tone (Demonstrate with “sit” and “down”)
Reprimand tone (Demonstrate with “ah, ah” and “stop”)
Praise vs. Petting – “Praise your dog” means verbally praise.
Behavior modification
Dealing with problems such as:
- Excessive barking
- Jumping up
- Digging
- Chewing
- Separation Anxiety
- Biting, mouthing, nipping
- Aggression towards people and/or animals
- Pulling
- Counter Surfing
- General destructive behavior
You As Your Dog's Leader
Training serves to strengthen the bond between a dog and his owner. It builds communication, understanding, and mutual respect, and subtly but effectively demonstrates to your dog that you’re the leader of the pack (commonly referred to as the “Alpha”). And if your dog doesn’t respect you as his leader, you may both be in big trouble, particularly if he’s a bit rowdy or dominant by nature.

A well-behaved, obedience trained dog is a pleasure to own because he can go virtually anywhere without being a risk or nuisance to others. And don’t we all want a dog who exhibits appropriate behavior in a crowd, good manners when we have guests in our home, is reliable around children, and who doesn’t threaten other dogs or passers-by?
